Due to the warm damp weather we have had recently, the hayfever season seems to have started earlier than ever.
Many of the treatments for hayfever in adults and older children are available to buy without prescription from pharmacies (chemists), and some of these are cheaper to buy than the charge of a prescription.
Loratidine and cetirizine tablets do not normally cause drowsiness – particularly important during exam time – and give relief from the common hayfever symptoms. Most pharmacies will sell non-branded tablets cheaper than the cost of a prescription – so ask for these rather than the branded products.
For those who suffer mainly from irritated eyes, sodium cromoglycate (Opticrom®) and Lodoxamine (Alomide®) eye drops can help.
If stuffy or runny noses are the main problem, a nasal spray containing beclometasone (Beconase Allergy®) or futicasone (Flixonase Allergy®) used regularly throughout the season can help control these symptoms.
Always remember to ask the pharmacist’s advice when buying these products so that they can check which would be most suitable. If you take regular medicines, let the pharmacist know so that they can check there are no problems with taking these products with your regular medicines.
